John Mazza - Golf
Early Years
John David Mazza was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia in 1955; one year later, his family moved to Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. At eight years old he would join his dad on the golf course every chance he had. At age ten, he began playing in the junior golf program at Blackhawk Golf Course every week. By the age of sixteen, John had begun to travel the east coast every summer competing and working on his game. In 1973 and 1977, John qualified for the United States Amateur Championship. In 1979, two years after his second appearance, John earned his PGA Tour Card.
Professional Golf
In 1979, John qualified for the PGA Tour where he played from 1979 through 1983. John played in the United States Open Championship in 1989 and 1997, as well as two PGA Championships in 1997 and 2001. After leaving the PGA Tour John became a Class A PGA Club Professional; he continued to participate in the Tri-State local events and was Player of the Year six times. In 1996, John won the Pennsylvania Open Championship, which he considers to be one of his greatest victories.
At the age of fifty John decided to move on from his position as the Head Golf Professional at Montour Heights Country Club. He went on to qualify for the 2006 United States Senior Open Championship and the Senior PGA Championship. In the fall of 2006, John qualified for the 2007 Champions Tour, Senior PGA Championship, and was the Senior Tri-State Player of the year.
Club Professional
John began his stint as a club professional at Fox Run Golf Course in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. In 1994 he took on his first Head Golf Professional job at Montour Heights Country Club in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. John now maintains the role of Head Golf Professional at Connoquenessing Country Club in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. He has been there since 2009.
Personal Life
John and his wife Gretchen have been married for thirty one wonderful years. They have two children together Michelle (27) and Michael (24). The constant support from his family and friends has helped him to succeed throughout his career. John’s love for the game of golf is a legacy from his father, for which he is forever grateful.
